Downton Abbey Tea Party!

Scones for the SconeLady

It is 7:10 pm Sunday night, and I am baking scones for the Downton Abbey Tea Party. We can already smell them, and know that they will be delicious. For they will be Rosie's Scones.

Friend Rosie and Ted

Friend Rosie taught me (as well you know) how to do a proper scone 20+ years ago, and I have never forgotten. In September she and I together watched the season premiere of this year's Downton Abbey, in England. I am on my second go around and am enjoying it hugely. This time, with scones. And tea. And family.

(But poor Anna!)

For those who do not have the recipe, here it is:

4 cups self rising flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs plus enough milk to make 1 1/2 cup liquid
(set aside 2 Tablespoons of the milk/egg mixture to brush onto the scones before baking)

Combine 4 cups flour with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 cup sugar. Add 1/2 cup (one stick) butter, mixing with your fingers. The mixture will be coarse, with all of the butter coated by the flour.

Add 2 eggs plus enough milk to make 1 1/2 cup liquid.  Set aside 2 Tablespoons of the milk/egg mixture to brush atop the scones prior to baking.

Roll dough out on floured surface, and cut into rounds. I used a jam jar, but cookie cutters work even better!

Place on a floured cookie sheet, and brush with the mild/egg mixture. Sprinkle the tops with sparkling sugar (regular sugar is fine if you don't have sparkling).

Bake 10 to 13 minutes, or until golden brown. I had to add a couple of minutes to the baking time, but each oven will be different. Watch carefully not to over-brown.

The finished product! The Downton Abbey Tea Party was a success!
Remember - if you have to ask, you'll never understand.. (See post from 1/5/14)

SPECIAL NOTE: My daughter is a sewist and blogger extraordinaire over at www.cailamade.com. Today's post features Rosie's Scones. Together we have experienced many a scone from this darling recipe and I know you will love it!

  3. I am drooling right now. Between your post and Caila's it is making this Daniel Plan very difficult!

  4. It must be hard, no scones on the Daniel Plan! But I have seen so many delicious things on it that hopefully it can be great too!
