Downton Abbey Without Matthew

Today thousands (ok, millions) of people must be writing those words, Downton Abbey Without Matthew. But I just can't help myself. I am one of them.

Like so many of you, I had utterly no idea anything like this WOULD EVER HAPPEN TO MATTHEW. It was clearly enormously devastating. Matthew was one of the central reasons for watching the series, and he became even more interesting each week. One wanted to cheer him on, in the face of various oppositions to his plans/hopes/dreams/willingness to work. Perhaps that was it - he had a working man's ethic that I appreciated. Whatever. We felt intrigued and compelled to watch.

And then - he was gone, in a most sudden and startling way.

(But - how does someone perish in a dreadful car smash, and look this dreamy and uninjured? I ask you).

So last night's season premiere would help us to peer into where the series itself would go, without him. What wife Mary would do, without him. What the baby, the greater family, the estate would do, without the rudder that was Matthew. And I am happy to pronounce myself satisfied that Downton Abbey is not now a rudderless ship; gratified that the show's creators have produced an offering that kept us as attentive and absorbed as ever.

I am not a movie reviewer, but I will say that I'm determined not to miss any of the following episodes. Everyone I have spoken to who watched has said the same thing.

And that we are greedy, even impatient for next Sunday!

So get out the rolling pins because the SconeLady is having a TEA PARTY FOR EPISODE TWO! Oh yes. She has no TV but will find a way to indulge in tea and scones and a Screen. Somewhere. Somehow.

Perhaps my sister...

See you along the way!
the SconeLady
