Downton Abbey Maintains Strong Ratings - So Far

Stunned Fans Are Not So Sure

As the theme music began to play during the opening of Season 4 two weeks ago, my arms actually developed goose bumps (admit it now, yours did too, right?). This surprised me. I was excited for the new season, but for the music to have that effect was interesting. The power of a Theme Song!

Last Sunday night's opening strands found me enthusiastic as well, but then it all spiraled down into goose bumps of another kind, and very unpleasantly so. The brutality of (Spoiler Alert) the attack on Anna left us speechless. And I am hoping that tonight things will improve for us all. And most of all, for poor Anna!

When this episode aired in the United Kingdom, it later developed that fans were incensed. They felt it was 'a sensational stunt', perhaps a ratings grab. They wondered if American audiences would feel the same, or would we be more forgiving. Are we? Do we think it was a 'stunt'?

I don't see into the mind of Downton's only writer, Julian Fellowes. I have liked most of what he has done so far in the series, and don't know why he decided to shatter innocence in such a way. Anna and Bates have portrayed a solid marriage week after week, her sweetness toward him so steady all down the years. Perhaps it was felt that they needed some catalyst to deepen their relationship (I know - as if).

Whatever the reason, my goose bumps are wary right about now. It is 2 hours until episode 3, so I had better get ready. No scones tonight, though. No party. Last week's celebratory Tea Party came to a sad and unexpected end, beginning with the Evil Creep's move to block Anna's exit from the kitchen. And now she will have to put up with his Evil Creepy-ness while Lord Gillingham stays at Downton.

I am going to bide my time by putting my trust in Bates, for now. To come save the day. To have sense enough not to just fly off and kill that excuse for a human being. For Bates to Find A Way.

That's it! Find A Way, Bates.

We're watching!

See you along the way!
