Addison's Walk

There is a very beautiful pathway to walk, in Oxford University. This Walk may be found if you visit Magdalen College, where C.S. Lewis spent 29 years as a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature. I came upon it quite by accident while staying at Magdalen in September. Its name is Addison's Walk.

Addison's Walk is mere steps from Lewis' rooms, in the 'New' Building (built during the 1800s). It became a favorite spot for him to stroll, both alone and with friends such as J.R.R. Tolkien.

In fact, Lewis has written that it was along Addison's Walk that Tolkien spoke to him of Christianity, long into the wee hours one night. Becoming convinced of the Truth, Lewis however states that he 'came kicking and screaming' into the kingdom of Heaven (perhaps a difference between Lewis and some of us, is that some of us have never yet stopped kicking and screaming!).

However that may be, I spent several mornings walking along this lovely place, loving its beauty and its significance in the life of that one man. He was to walk here upon many occasions, working through and finding answers to much that perplexed him during those years at Oxford.

Perhaps you will not be going to Oxford anytime soon; perhaps you will. But either way you can stroll along an Addison's Walk of your own; pondering, asking, questioning, and possibly even finding Answers to much that perplexes you.

I hope so. See you along the way!
