Cornwall, Day 18: Blue Becomes Gray, and the Poppins is Open

For those of us who like staying inside and warm during rain showers, this would be considered a perfect day. But I just couldn't stay in, not really. So there were a variety of forays, in and out, all day long.

The first outing was in search of the most delicious apple and blackberry Cornish Pasty. Yes! apparently a Cornish Pasty can come in the sweeter varieties, and we have discovered them. There is even powdered sugar on top and when I purchased them this morning (during a rain shower), they were still hot from having been in the oven. The Pasty maker is getting used to me/us stopping by of a morning, and she now automatically reaches into her case - and smiles.

The sweet pasty, our own fresh coffee, a window view out onto the wet cobblestones, and you have two happy campers right here.

There were walks around the Art galleries; walks to the train station to enquire as to trips we might take; walks to the blackberry bushes, high above the town. Always with the purple umbrella, and always finally giving up on my hair, which now permanently looks like a scarecrow. Sigh.

There was also a walk to find out if Poppins Tea Room was open for business. And to my delight, it was! At long last, their sign was out and the tablecloths were on. It was high time for another Cream Tea.

                          Poppins Tea Room

Poppins might be the cutest little Tea Room in St Ives, complete with the aforementioned tablecloths, variety tea sets, and sweet little touches such as flowers - not to mention the free Wifi, which will forever endear them to the SconeLady's husband.

And the scone was a good one! substantially better than many we have eaten these past two weeks. The scone was warm, and the tea was great. My only concern was that the scone was served with jam and cream in the packaging you see above. It wasn't what you might call excellent, that jam and cream. And for a good scone to be spread with a not-so-good jam/cream combination, well it just didn't fit.

Still, it was good. Honestly. The Digey Food Rooms still holds the #1 spot in Cornwall, and I don't really think any tea room will outdo the Digey. But we don't have very many days left to find out (but I won't talk about that right now).

And finally, after a dinner at the Rum & Crab Shack along the Wharf, we are sitting companionably together, eyes on our respective laptops, listening to the rain outside. By all accounts, that rain is probably going to be with us for the rest of our sojourn. But will we mind it all that much? Nope. We plan to take a walking tour, hop on buses and trains to see Cathedrals and tin mines, make some last minute purchases, and eat up a storm.

Sound like rain to you?

See you along the way!
the SconeLady
