It had been a long and arduous drive, but worth all the effort in the end. Grandma and Grandpa were understandably ecstatic to welcome/hug/laugh/cherish, and want them. Grandma had filled the refrigerator with their favorites until nothing more could possibly fit! And don't forget the multitudes of frogs in the yard for them to catch. I'm sure the frogs were looking forward to it just as much as the kids were! (well..).
The three had waited all year to come back, and the grandparents had waited all year for the same. It is such fun to think that they might love this as much as I did years ago, driving toward Grandma Ida's big house. That was what 'vacation' meant - a kind of Heaven on earth. Bliss.
A friend also awaited. They were once again a foursome, and talked endlessly (while munching pancakes) about jumping on the trampoline, playing in the treehouse, riding bikes and scooters together, swimming at the community pool, and - best of all - catching frogs. Frogs, it seems, would be the highlight.
This first day there was kayaking and stand up paddle boarding, daddy and mommy giving everyone a go. There was picnicking and swimming (this was important so they could practice their skills in and around the water). Oh - and at the end of all that, there was a cold glass of 'root beard' for each small person. A rare and lovely treat!
Everyone is now exhausted, most particularly the parents who drove all the hours straight through from the bottom of one state to the middle of another. The grandparents also are (mildly?) tired out... just now they are both being very still, in the enduring heat wave that descended with unexpected swiftness. Argh! Poor the SconeLady.
But - it's all good. All the excitement from both ends of this visit, theirs and ours, is paying off. You know what I love about this one? The three little blondes don't appear to think of grandparents as 'old'. They don't actually think of them as young, either. They just - well, they just think of us, whatever it is that we are.
To me, that is simply life on a silver platter.
See you along the way!
the SconeLady
