Oscar 2014 (part 3)

Who Is The Fairest Of Them All

Here we sit (one of us is jumping up and down) as the Red Carpet spectacle begins! This is a family affair with friends, moms, dads, great aunts, great uncles, tiny nieces, and small nephew all gathered expectantly. Well... some of us are expectant. Of the men, at least one is of the eat-and-run variety and will soon escape. But we forgive him for that because he is so nice about it.

The tiny children hopped (with parental supervision) from the ottoman to the doggy bed during the commercials. Friendly dogs roamed the room seeking out random bits of sustenance, and petting. From time to time there was a bark or a lick. But we forgive them for that because they are so polite about it.

And what did we decide to fix for dinner? Not meat loaf (too humble); or spaghetti (too messy); nothing fish-like or fried (too smelly). We, in fact, didn't really have dinner at all. We had the most delicious homemade sourdough waffles! Plus sausage, bacon, strawberries, whipped cream, and a variety of syrups. My sister cooked, set out, served, poured, held babies, walked dogs, and cleaned up, all the while keeping a distracted eye on Oscar. It was all a huge success.

I liked that Oscar was more enjoyable this year and did not drag. Ellen all dressed up as a pink-but-gawky Wizard of Oz witch was a real scream. And preferable to other Oscar hosts who tend to embarrass themselves or tell the wrong sorts of jokes. Or dress up as Queen Elizabeth the first.

For the rest...

  • Charlize Theron's mysterious dress was great, although a bit of a risk. But Jennifer Garner's was hands-down gorgeously stupendous.
  •  Lupita Nyong'o's and Matthew McConaughey's acceptances were very touching. You must watch them on youtube and be awed, as we were.
  • A lot was made about Jarod Leto and we don't know why.
  • Ellen took a selfie and crashed Twitter.
  • The gown necklines plunged to new lows and created a stir.
  • Ellen served pizza.
  • And Jim Carey maybe should have stayed home.

The night was fun but now, there is a whole other year to wait for the next one. A year's worth of movies to sit through. The prospect that Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence will be in MORE movies which the Academy will watch and nominate. And the suspense of who will host next year, all still ahead. I don't think I can take it.

But I wouldn't mind another waffle or two.

See you along the way!
