Wine and Vinyl
If you happen to have any 'records' mouldering away in some closet under musty boxes, it is imperative that you unearth them. Listen to them. Or if you cannot because you do not have a 'record player' (turntable), then go out and get one. Now!
And by the way, perhaps you could invite someone over, anyone (me?..), to enjoy them with you. Add a little wine and some cheese, maybe a meal, and you have the makings of a memorable evening.
This we did, last night. With cheerful and charming loved ones. And it has lifted me into a spate of nostalgia the likes of which I hadn't felt in a while. Music has a way of pleasantly inviting emotion and even intellect back to a different time and place. I think it brought me most of all to a dear small town where high school, and friends, and basketball games all made a great deal of difference in my life. A very sweet place indeed.
The first of these inviting tunes was recorded by The Association in 1967. Never My Love. I and my good friends swooned over this at the time. There was something in it that made us think about falling in love, even though there was really no one right then to fall in love with. We were young teenagers, and falling in love with any one person seemed to wait in the distance for us. But it did make us think about it.
Do you remember the lyrics to this much-favored song? I am about to tell them to you but first I must share that the song itself is the 2nd most played song on radio and television in the 20th century. THAT is how powerful and lovely it is! Numerous recording artists and bands have made it their own by making the effort and time to lay it down on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, DAT, CD, or iTunes. I would like to have written it! Darn.
I know you know them, but please take a look, once more, at these lyrics:
You ask me if there'll come a time
When I'll grow tired of you.
Never my love. Never my love.
You wonder if this heart of mine
Will lose its desire for you.
Never my love. Never my love.
What makes you think love will end
When you know that my whole life depends - On you?
You say you fear I'll change my mind
And I won't require you.
Never my love. Never my love.
How can you think love will end
When I've asked you to spend your whole life - With me?
Never my love. Never my love.
Do you feel the call of these words? They spoke of a place deep down that encouraged a long love; where you weren't grown tired of and minds did not change; where your loved one would always feel that your love met an essential within them. I and my good friends knew that we wanted the kind of a love that said, Never, my love.

I know already that there are three small persons 1,000 miles from here who hold that hope as well. They aren't very old or very big yet. But they have 'old' and 'big' dreams, and I sincerely hope no one ever discourages them from an Idealism that keeps that kind of hope close. They know that their mother married in a 'dazzle of love' (her own words). Would we ever want to discourage a hope as fond as that?
Never, my Love.
See you along the way!
