Along The Path From Zennor

We were about to bear to the left, but weren't exactly sure that was the right way. It's like that when you are on a footpath in Cornwall, and you have to keep your eyes peeled for the Yellow Arrow signs. As we hesitated, a man and his border collie climbed up and over a stile, and looked at us.

"Hello!" he said in a friendly way. We said "Hello!" back. He said he was going to Zennor, and we said we were going to St Ives.

"That's not the way to St Ives," he continued, indicating the direction we had been about to go. And in a few words he explained that straight ahead, was. We thanked him, swung about, and started walking again - but it seemed that he wanted to talk.

"I've gone out of the System," he said.

"You have?" we replied.

"Yes, totally out; and now I am walking for Jesus. It's all I do." We noticed that he had a Holy Bible tucked into the waistband of his trousers, rather like a Beacon to the rest of the world as they walked past. Anyone could see it, and be encouraged to remember it for its great truth and wisdom.

So we listened and nodded, and he shared that two years ago he had decided to be Off Grid, and begin walking. He's been walking since, dear Readers. Two years! And I thought I was a walker. He and his dog certainly looked healthy, and although the man looked a little mussed, in his face you could see the light of kindness.

Both the man and his dog smiled at us, then turned, walked past, and climbed over the next stile (There are lots of stiles here in Cornwall). And then he was gone. I've thought about him since, thankful that he was there just when we needed him, that his faithful dog is by his side, and that his Holy Bible is tucked safely into the waistband of his trousers, always needed, always faithful.

You never know whom you will meet along the way, hmm? It's fun to anticipate, and one of these days, it may actually be you. I'm looking forward to that.

See you along the way!

Taking the footpath from Zennor to St Ives has become tradition, now.

  2. Oh Sister! The Holy Spirit is working in that kind man, and we are all better for it, as he shares and gives kind direction, and tells his story, and shares his journey. Your's, dear sister, is equally enthralling and inspiring.
