My Home Town (8)

The SconeLady does not like sitting in a car for 5 hours anymore. It is all over now, but - man. If only we could truly be 'beamed up' to places, instead of having to SIT SQUIRMING IN A TIN CAN FOR PROTRACTED LENGTHS OF TIME.

However. It was worth all this just being with the people who appeared in My Home Town. They were sweet. And we hardly even talked about health problems. Not that I would mind talking about health problems, for the SconeLady has a great and varied interest in such things. It is always interesting to hear (and be heard) regarding aching backs, suspected strokes, spinal fusions, Aunt Suzie's pacemakers and the like. But sometimes it is nice to touch on other things such as how beautiful our grandchildren are and how completely and utterly talented.

Nothing is so satisfying as that.

Everything was fun and everyone enjoyed everything. My memories include:

  • turning on the steps to see a classmate below, laughing up toward me in her happiness to find me
  • gathering at the Long Branch to eat and talk and share updates, laughing to beat the band
  • every few minutes someone shouting, "Picture!" and classmates halting their conversations to obediently pose
  • watching a beloved Aunt loving it all, and being just as much a part of it as everyone else
  • gathering on top of hay bales on a tractor, practicing our parade waves and shouting out "CLASS OF '69 IS MIGHTY FINE!!"
  • family eating together near the most beautiful red barn in this wide world
  • the town cemetery green and lovely in the morning chill, perusing the names of those we have known and lost
  • gathering in a sweet church with those whose focus we share
  • saying our goodbyes at the end, promising "In five years!" while waving each other down the road.
Yes, it was all satisfying, and great fun. The SconeLady is squinting hopelessly at these words now, and must say her own goodnights - no time to edit!

Small, innocent moments. I shall fall to sleep thinking of them, remembering.

The class of '69, you ask?  MIGHTY FINE!

See you along the way!
the SconeLady
