The day began with whales frolicking around in the waters of Depoe Bay. You can see one above - just look for the spout! I don't know if whales actually have fun. No one has told me that they do. But it sure seems like it, because they spend almost all of their time just bounding around, up and down, spouting dramatically and then, doing the whole thing all over again. Yep - It's gotta be fun.
The day ended with dinner offered from the kind hands of sweet friends. Dinner with friends is always a treat but these friends are Texans, and you know what THAT means. It means BIG, and it means BARBECUE in the nicest, tastiest possible way. I knew from the moment we were invited that it would be spectacular. My mouth began to water as I visualized the table settings, the barbecue ribs that would make their way to our plates, and the laughter and the stories that would probably grace the table.
The vegetables had all been grown right there on the farm. The ribs were done to a turn on our host's Big Green Egg Barbecue grill in the outdoor kitchen while the men stood around and watched. There is nothing sweeter and fresher than barbecue ribs at the hands of a tall Texan who knows what's what.
The stories, the food, and the friends were all a blast. You can't see it in the photo below, but the man who is filtering the wine was laughing hilariously. Just imagine a Texas-sized grin radiating out as the wine drifts downward. While that happens, his wife introduces us to two visiting Texan friends. Gracious, funny, and interesting, all. Just the sort of people you hoped would be in this world.
A small outpost of refinement, that's what it all was. They are everywhere in this world, if you look. Or maybe you could create one of your own. All it takes is a summer's night, a full moon, some Barbecue, and an invitation. Try it! We could all use a little refinement.
See you along the way!
