Valentine's Day

Money Can't Buy Me Love

On this Valentine's Day of 2014, I can acknowledge that the above statement is true. This is at least partly because when my husband and I were circling around the idea of marriage, money had nothing to do with the decision. It was the 1970s and really no one had money and none of us were worrying very much about it.

First of all, we were in college and most of my friends had taken out student loans in order to go. This meant that there weren't just bags of money to throw about. My husband-to-be was this gorgeous guy who was just as careful as I was with money. He and I didn't very often go for meals out. We went for coffee. And the cup of coffee at our place of choice was 10 cents. This was our big expenditure.

It is amazing how much fun one can have over a ten cent cup of bottomless coffee. We would sit there all night sometimes, laughing, talking, planning life. It could not have been any nicer had we been able to order steak and seafood.

It was a long, long way from Starbucks. And I loved it.

Our financial state did not change very quickly, certainly not through college. And yet there was love, and fun - lots and lots of that. So to say 'Money Can't Buy Me Love' was absolutely true and a real gem of a statement.

It must be harder now, what with all the new things to spend on and distract everyone - the cell phones and video games (do young video game players ever look a girl in the eye?), the apps, the pods and pads, all of which cost an arm to procure. It must be hard for a ten cent cup of coffee to compete.

But I was the lucky one. Even without makeup, this blond girl with a guitar and a bike became the person that guy wanted more than anyone else.

And for a ten cent cup of coffee, he got himself a real bargain.

Happy Valentine's Day, Darling!
