Bruno Mars

Just The Way You Are

We here at SconeTherapy had fun watching the Super Bowl! ... Well, kind of. Maybe some of it felt just a wee bit lame because there wasn't that much competition in this world's biggest, most expensively competitive game. But I'll tell you what really WAS fun. Bruno Mars.

We didn't know Bruno Mars and had not been aware that there was a Bruno Mars. But we are aware now, and won't forget it anytime soon.  From the moment of his opening drum set to the fading tones of the final song, my Scone Therapists and I were surprisingly entertained. He and his band were everything a good Super Bowl halftime show needs to be. And he did it with wit, and charm, and in the end - with heart.

They were well-prepared and well-seasoned, for a bunch of young guys. But mostly I am thinking about the final tune he shared with his 115.3 million viewers. In it was a message every girl and every woman would very much like to hear:

'You are amazing, just the way you are.'

There isn't much more I need to say to decipher this simple memorandum. The words pretty much say it without me at all:

Oh you know, I'd never ask you to change
If perfect's what you're searching for then just stay the same.
Don't even bother asking if you look okay, you know I'll say,

When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing just the way you are.
And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
'Cause girl you're amazing just the way you are.

Walton, Khalil / Lawrence, Philip / Mars, Bruno / Levine, Ari / Cain, Khari.

Every girl remembers what it was like to feel she didn't 'get the memo' about wearing just the right thing to the dance. At any age, it is far more desirable to be told you are amazing. Or even perfect!

As for the Super Bowl, I did enjoy watching Richard Sherman be 'the greatest Cornerback in the NFL' (I am quoting Richard Sherman). I thought Seahawks' Quarterback Russell Wilson's massive yardage was electrifying. I found it inspiring that at the game's end, Montee Ball (Denver #28) approached and shook the hand of Wilson (his college teammate at Wisconsin).

But in the midst of all the touchdowns, commercials, and injuries, there had been that one rare moment which stuck with us. Something clean, and sweet, and entirely good.

And I hope you got that Memo.

See you along the way!

  1. Mom you're fun! Bruno Mars' story is pretty incredible too. He really had to work his way up. He was writing songs for other singers and sometimes singing background for something like 15 years I think. Great writing and I like your blog design!
