People Who Do This Are Crazy

I can't believe there are actually people who have the courage to jump into the cold waters of Cornwall, and come out of it alive. Can you? Well Okay, I have done this thing, but it was terribly hard, and I thought at the time that it was crazy and that I would never do it again.

Yesterday a huge crowd gathered at the wharf and watched people jump in to race each other around the buoy, and back again. Mothers and friends and ice cream eaters stood bundled up at the shore screaming as the swimmers made their way through that impossibly frigid water. After each race, almost all of the swimmers just walked around as if nothing odd had just happened. They didn't rush off to change clothes, either, and add layers or get out of the wind.

We saw some of them mingling in the crowd later on, trying to answer the unanswerable question: "HOW ON EARTH DID YOU DO THAT?"

You might be thinking that these swimmers were young people, but many of those nut cases were of-an-age! I am filled with admiration!

What a terrific way to kick off this wonderful month in St Ives. This won't be the only time the Cornish will surprise us. There might be helmeted cyclists dashing up steep hills to the finish line, or 150 motor cyclers dressed like the olden days, driving noisily through the streets of St Ives, or buffed up Triatheloners doing their level best to beat the guy out in front of them. It's all part and parcel of the fun of Cornwall, and I don't want to miss any of it!

See you along the way!
