St Ives has become an Artist's paradise, this past week. Its September Festival began with a bang on the 8th, fireworks lighting up the night sky and electrifying this village that normally wouldn't say 'boo' to a goose. Every morning the townsfolk study the new schedule of events: concerts, walks, painting lessons, meet-the-Artist get togethers, meet-the-Potter sessions, presentations about Art in St Ives, Noir films, plays, and quartets in odd places. You might be walking down Fore Street when suddenly a group will begin playing, singing, or acting out a vignette. And IT ISN'T A FLASH MOB. It's genuine. You stop, and watch.
We got to see the two jazz guitarists when this all began, and then today I got to hear a famous potter speaking about his work with the Leach Pottery. His name is Roelof Uys. Don't ask me how to pronounce it because I won't know. Take your pick.
I knew of him already, because in 2011 my sister and I had been in his shop and found that he was nice, and finally bought a large and splendid bowl. How excited we were to carry this 'thank you' to friend Rosie. But train travel is not always what it should be, and somewhere between here and Norfolk, somehow the bowl was knocked. Or bumped. Or even dropped. We don't know. Something made the lovely piece crack, and chip. We still can't stand to think of it.
But friend Rosie (now the proud owner of the cracked bowl) took out her special glue and special implements, and repaired it. You can hardly tell it was ever bumped! (or cracked, or chipped). If you were to go to her house, you would see it sitting there in her beautiful garden room near the bread oven.
Roelof spoke today about 'Pots and Practice', because he is the Lead Potter at the St Ives Leach, and doesn't have his shop anymore. But it was nice to be able to find him again, and be reminded of the beautiful bowl now situated in the farmlands of Norfolk.
But I did not mention the crack.
See you along the way!
