The Beach Boys Factor In

Sorry. The SconeLady is at it again, thinking about the music of The Beach Boys.

They might not have had the 'cute' factor of, say, a Paul McCartney. And masses of girls might not have screamed and fainted during their concerts. But these Boys had the music, in spades.

And at least we could hear it! The annoying thing about watching The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964 was all the infernal racket those girls were making. They screamed, and fainted, and gave themselves whiplash while hyperventilating on national TV. Nobody could even tell which song was being performed. It must have been kind of annoying to the Beatles, who were just trying to get their music out there (I know, they laughed all the way to the bank. Poor things).

But if you listened to The Beach Boys perform, their Good Vibrations were clear and unmistakeable. Maybe we girls didn't all faint or loose our sanity, but I do think we might have swooned.

For years, the competition between the two bands raged forward as each tried to out-write, out-record and out-do the other. John and Paul would hear the new Beach Boys album and say to each other, "Well we had better get our thinking caps on and write something even better." And Brian Wilson did the same when he listened to whatever the newest Beatles album offered. They nearly drove themselves crazy trying to one-up each other.

"“Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds, which inspired Sgt. Pepper’s and that inspired me to make Smile,” Brian Wilson tells [The Daily Beast], recalling his 1960s game of one-upmanship with the Beach Boys’ so-called rivals The Beatles."

But we girls didn't know anything about numbers. We just listened to the records and went on taping posters to the front of our school desks - incurring the wrath of our teachers who thought the whole thing was ridiculous.

Ah, it was a strange and wonderful time, the early 60's. And the great part is that we can bring it all back with one click! of a key stroke, put on our ear buds, and sail away once more.

See you along the way!
